T: Tango, Keep Clear of Me


Created to simplify long distance communication at sea, the colorful flags of the NATO system correspond to the 26 letters of the English alphabet. Each flag carries its own meaning or command, but can be used in combination with other flags to convey more detailed instructions. The flag series of Make a Signal serves as both allegory and alphabet, pairing traditional nautical flags with drawings of maritime ephemera and sea life.

The Crown of Thorns is a large and fast breeding invasive starfish, sharp and poisonous to the touch and a ravenous pest to its favorite food, coral polyps. It is believed higher water temperatures have contributed to its massive population blooms, causing widespread destruction to coral reefs across the world.
