Created to simplify long distance communication at sea, the colorful flags of the NATO system correspond to the 26 letters of the English alphabet. Each flag carries its own meaning or command, but can be used in combination with other flags to convey more detailed instructions. The flag series of Make a Signal serves as both allegory and alphabet, pairing traditional nautical flags with drawings of maritime ephemera and sea life.
